Think and Grow Rich – Chapter 1

Thoughts are things

In The Intention Experiment: Using Your Thoughts to Change Your Life and the World, Lynne McTaggart writes:

”A sizable body of research exploring the nature of consciousness, carried on for more than thirty years in prestigious scientific institutions around the world, shows that thoughts are capable of affecting everything from the simplest machines to the most complex living beings. This evidence suggests that human thoughts and intentions are an actual physical "something" with astonishing power to change our world. Every thought we have is tangible energy with the power to transform. A thought is not only a thing; a thought is a thing that influences other things.”

Human thoughts are usually planted in the brain through conscious or unconscious self-talk.    Dr. David Burns, author of Feeling Good, The New Mood Therapy suggests we listen to our self-talk.  Don’t try to change it right away, just listen.

People are meant to have lots of emotions & we learn from them.  Unfortunately, our past helps determine how we respond to these emotions and many of these past experiences have been negative.  We may be prone to look through life with a large supply of negative self-talk.

If we feel anxious,we need to notice what we're are thinking. “What if this terrible catastrophe happens to me?”  Dr Burns would say we were fortune telling, anticipating unpleasant or even disastrous future events, as these thoughts tend to fulfill their prophecy.

These negative thoughts affect our mood and our health. The beginning therapy for this problem is to write down what self-talk messages were generated during a specific negative thought.  Get to know what’s on your tape.  We don’t need to pressure ourselves to change, just acknowledge that we have a few negative thoughts now and then.  He then suggests a number of things you can do to change that tape, which are in his book.

As we begin to recognize our self-defeating thoughts and respond to them, they will diminish and we become able to open up to the positive desires of our hearts and feed them into our brains with self-talk.  Just today, I heard a leader in my company say that it was a huge help for her to wake up every morning and nearly shout,

“I believe that I’m going to be in a position in my company making $500 a month in 3 months AND I’m doing it!”

In just a few years, she has now grown way past that and is #7 in her very large company.

Hill says, “When Henley wrote the prophetic lines, “I am the Master of my Fate, I am the Captain of my Soul,” he should have informed us that we are the Masters of our Fate, the Captains of our Souls, because we have the power to control our thoughts.”

Thanks to Linda and Michael Dlouhy for encouraging us to participate in these "Think and Grow Rich" lessons, so that we might contemplate our own self talk and begin to master it.  Thanks to all of you who are here to listen, comment and share your own brilliant thoughts.  You are my inspiration!
