CHAPTER 9 PERSISTENCE: THE SUSTAINED
EFFORT NECESSARY TO INDUCE FAITH

Webster’s definition of persistence-

1: the action or fact of persisting

2: the quality or state of being persistent;
   especially : perseverance.

3: the synonyms of persistence include the following:
ceaselessness, continance, continuity, durability,
duration, endurance, continuation.

As I reviewed this chapter, I kept being drawn back the
title of the chapter: THE SUSTAINED EFFORT NECESSARY TO
INDUCE FAITH. Sustained defined: continuing for an
extended period or without interruption.

Our son, Jeremy, was born on March 1, 1971 weighting only
2lbs 9ozs. At birth he has only given 72 hours to live. Now,
Jeremy was not premature, but a full-term baby, but due to
Connie preeclampsia, high blood pressure and fluid retention
she had been hospitalized for 21 days just 2 months before
he has born. She lost 26lbs from the reducing of the fluids,
and with this loss Jeremy also lost weight.

Our doctor decided to start feeding Jeremy within 2 hours of
his birth which has highly irregular. He started by only
feeding him only .25 of 1oz every two hour so as not to put
too much on his stomach. With persistence this was done around
the clock. Before the 72 hours had elapsed Jeremy has turning
around. The doctor visited us all excited that Jeremy had just
take .5 oz. With persistence, slowly increase the intake Jeremy
weighed 5 lbs. 3 oz. in 5 weeks and has able to go home with us
for the first time.

Hill said, “There are four simple steps which lead to the habit
of PERSISTENCE. They call for no great amount of intelligence,
no amount of education, and but little time or effort. The
necessary steps are:

1. A definite purpose backed by burning desire for its
fulfillment. Our doctor had a definite purpose for Jeremy
to live.

2. A definite plan, expressed in continuous action. Just
think being feed every 2 to 3 hours for 5 weeks.

3. A mind closed tightly against all negative and discouraging
influences. including negative suggestions like “this has never
been done before.”

4. A friendly alliance with one or more persons who will
encourage one to follow through with both plan and purpose.

On March 1st Jeremy will be 47 years young and will passed 2 lbs.
9 oz. A son who is a good man, husband and father. If you can’t
tell I am just a little proud of him.
