Chapter 9 Persistence

PERSISTENCE: THE SUSTAINED EFFORT NECESSARY TO INDUCE FAITH

The Eighth Step toward Riches

When I read a chapter of Think and Grow Rich there is always a desire to look at the definitions of words as they occur in the Oxford Dictionary. This chapter was no exception and I found the following:

Persistence: “The fact of continuing in an opinion or course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition.”

Willpower: “Control exerted to do something or restrain impulses.”

Hill in the opening of this chapter states and I quote. “PERSISTENCE is an essential factor in the procedure of transmuting DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. The basis of persistence is the POWER OF WILL.
Will-power and desire, when properly combined, make an irresistible pair. Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally known as cold-blooded, and sometimes ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is willpower, which they mix with persistence, and place back of their desires to insure the attainment of their objectives.
Henry Ford has been generally misunderstood to be ruthless and coldblooded. This misconception grew out of Ford’s habit of following through in all of his plans with PERSISTENCE.

In the previous Chapters we have seen the relevance of Desire, Faith, Auto-Suggestion, Specialized Knowledge, Imagination, Organised Planning and Decision to ensure the transmuting of our original dream or idea into a final goal. However these are only steps which must be taken and only will they lead to the ultimate goal if we have an attitude of “Never Quitting”. This attitude is gained through continually seeking to find ways or additional ideas to continually move towards the final goal.

Edison in his pursuit to develop the incandescent light bulb did not give up when his first experiment failed. He “Persisted”, changing one element of the experiment, tested it and noted the results and compared with previous results. He followed this procedure more than 10,000 times until a successful combination of materials and atmospheres was achieved and the incandescent light bulb was a reality. He had combined His Passionate Desire with Will Power to ensure that he would not give up until he achieved a workable and economic incandescent light globe.

So many people give up on their dreams because of obstacles, many of which are placed in our path by people’s opinions; I know I used to listen to opinions, not these days. These days I persist in path set out before me and follow it according to an organised plan that may have minor changes made when it can be shown by analysis and agreement within the Master Mind Group.

How you do anything is how you do everything, if you give up at the first sign of failure, then this will be persistent pattern in all things you do. If instead you see the failure as a challenge to be overcome by persistence in moving towards the final goal then everything you wish to obtain will be obtained.
