Chapter 14: The Sixth Sense
The Doorway to the Temple of Wisdom
The Thirteenth Step Toward Riches
“The starting point of all achievement is desire. The finishing point is that brand of knowledge which leads to understanding – understanding of self, understanding of others, understanding of the laws of Nature, recognition and understanding of happiness.”
The sixth sense, according to Hill, is direct communication with Infinite Intelligence – God. One might suggest that, just as we talk to God through prayer, God speaks to each of us through the sixth sense. The sixth sense presents itself to each of us through our desires in the forms of hunches, inspirations, dreams, Déjà vu, moments of clarity – that chance encounter with someone whose words spoken, directly or indirectly, in your presence provide a solution, or an answer you have been seeking. If you have ever woke up in the middle of the night with a flash of brilliance, a solution, or an inspiration – that is the sixth sense working in your life. Your subconscious mind working in direct communication with your God bringing forth answers, as Hill would say, from the ether.
Hill included this chapter in Think and Grow Rich, because, as he stated, “the book is designed for the purpose of presenting a complete philosophy by which individuals may unerringly guide themselves in attaining whatever they ask of life.”
A complete philosophy by which I may UNERRINGLY guide myself in ATTAINING WHATEVER I ASK OF LIFE. Through desire, through faith, through the thirteen principles – each of us may create our own unique destinies by setting our sails and pursuing our individual goals and dreams; and in the process develop a brand of knowledge that leads to understanding
– understanding of SELF, understanding of OTHERS, understanding of the LAWS of NATURE, recognition and understanding of HAPPINESS. These are the PROMISES!
The promises laid out by Hill in Think and Grow Rich – made available to each and every one of us. Several thoughts blaze through my mind simultaneously as I revel in my own personal awareness of the sixth sense working in my life. One thought is that every time I review my goals my mind takes me to Jim Rohn’s instructions not to set a goal for what you will get to achieve it, but to set a goal for what you must become to achieve it.
Another thought is of my morning prayers, and of one line – “Thank you God for the opportunities you have placed before me – those seen, and those yet to be revealed. May I become the man I MUST BECOME in order to accomplish the goals before me.” The sixth sense is a spiritual connection with the universe – it is not a separation from the world, it is me being a part of all that is around me.
Developing the sixth sense has been, and will continue to be a journey –
Hill states, “… the spiritual forces, with which the sixth sense is so closely related, do not mature and become usable except through years of meditation, self-examination, and serious thought.” And through its development “… you will find yourself in possession of a power that will enable you to throw off discouragement, master fear, overcome procrastination, and draw freely upon your imagination.”
