CHAPTER 9 PERSISTENCE: THE SUSTAINED
EFFORT NECESSARY TO INDUCE FAITH
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful
men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is
almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of
educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are
omnipotent.” Calvin Coolidge
I saw persistence first this week. On Thursday morning about
9:30 I received a call from a nurse telling me Connie had
fallen and has being taken to the ER. I arrived 10 minutes or
more before the ambulance. Once I saw Connie I knew would not
be good. She had broken her right hip and would need surgery
immediately. Before 2:00 pm she was in surgery having the hip
This was just one more setback for Connie in facing her many
health issues. But the real persistence was on Friday the
first time they had her get out of bed and took her first step.
The persistence of having to push herself upon the side of the
bed, then to stand up with a walker and take that first step.
hen to watch her do it again and again by walk herself to the
bathroom. She is now ready to start rehab and rebuild her s
Hill wrote, “There may be no heroic connotation to the word
“persistence,” but the quality is to the character of man
(and women) what carbon is to steel. The building of a fortune,
generally, involves the application of the entire thirteen
factors of this philosophy. These principles must be understood,
they must be applied with PERSISTENCE by all who accumulate
Whether it is getting back on your feet after a broken hip,
knee replacement or building a business it calls for persistence.
When falls happens persistence is getting back up. When the
downloads are few persistence say do it again, again and again.
The ease with which lack of persistence may be conquered will
depend entirely upon the INTENSITY OF ONE’S DESIRE. The starting
point of all achievement is DESIRE. If you find yourself lacking
in persistence, this weakness may be remedied by building a
stronger fire under your desires.
With persistence in doing my self-talk, posting on LinkedIn and
Messenger the reward has come, making new connection, starting
conversations and daily downloads. I have had more fun staying
focus on others, not me.
For me the change came by following the four simple steps which
lead to the habit of persistence:
1. A DEFINITE PURPOSE BACKED BY BURNING DESIRE FOR ITS FULFILLMENT.
2. A DEFINITE PLAN, EXPRESSED IN CONTINUOUS ACTION.
3. A MIND CLOSED TIGHTLY AGAINST ALL NEGATIVE AND DISCOURAGING
INFLUENCES, including negative suggestions of relatives, friends
4. A FRIENDLY ALLIANCE WITH ONE OR MORE PERSONS WHO WILL
ENCOURAGE ONE TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH BOTH PLAN AND PURPOSE.
Wherever men and women accumulate great riches, you may be sure
they first acquired PERSISTENCE.
