Chapter 12 – The Subconscious Mind
For those readers who are parents, you may have experienced an interesting, but kind of scary phenomenon.
You say something in a moment of frustration or chaos to your child, and you realize that you sound just like
your mother or father. I know I’ve been caught off guard when this happened, and wondered to myself
“Where the heck did that come from?”
Where that came from is the subconscious mind, and years of programming by parents, relatives, teachers,
and the media. Many times we’re not even aware of our programming until we choose to become aware. We
make daily decisions about what kind of house or apartment we live in, how we spend or invest our money,
which people we associate with, and many, many more choices.
Yet, once we become aware of this programming we can choose to reprogram ourselves. Napoleon Hill says
“You may VOLUNTARILY plant in your subconscious mind any plan, thought, or purpose which you desire to
translate into its physical or monetary equivalent.” If you don’t like what your parents told you, you voluntarily
can choose to replace it with positive advice to your child. If you don’t like what your friends told you about
building a business from home, you voluntarily can choose to replace it with a powerful statement.
But Mr. Hill also warns us that “If you fail to plant DESIRES in your subconscious mind, it will feed upon the
thoughts which reach it as the result of your neglect.” What are you telling yourself that you want to change?
Is there some goal that you aim for, but can’t seem to reach? When you discover an old program that is
holding you back, change it with self-talk, and reprogram your subconscious mind. Start today.
